Eris by Draven Aurora

I received a free ARC from Reedsy Discovery for this book in exchange for an honest review. Link to my original review below.

3/5 - This is Definitely One for the Physical Self

This book surrounds the aspects of ghosts heavily. As the ruler of the underworld, it's Eris's job to take the evil spirits from Earth. When she neglects her duties, chaos ensues with ghosts becoming visible and eventually a normal part of everyday life for everyone.

Warning - This book contains graphic descriptions of violence and death.

Ami and Astrid were living their lives - day by day enjoying it. While living in separate generations, they have one thing in common. Eris's need to "live in the sun" overshadowed these girls' souls and bodies for quite some time. As Ami struggles with her life, past, ghosts, and a cult, the aspects of why Eris chose her become clear.

With the cult, Ami is accused of being a false prophet of Eric and is kidnapped to become a sacrifice so the ghosts can go to the underworld and stop hurting living people. When it doesn't work, Ami shows her incredible healing powers, leading her to her childhood best friend - the cult leader.

So many emotions I had while reading this book. Reading about ghosts and how they could progress to become dangerous if not taken care of is a fresh new idea surrounding the mythology in this novel. The pacing and flow were easy to keep up with, if I had a full day of nothing to do but read, I'd get this done again. The few action scenes it had showed the gravity of each situation.

Thankfully, it all builds up to an epic ending filled with love and friendship that has been acquired. The idea of soulmates hinted at in several scenes brings to mind that even those fitted for the worst jobs in life deserve love and something better. So much happens in these less than 300 pages but it's a wonderful tale of how precious life is and how some of us can take it for granted.
