I have always believed that reading will help me broaden my horizons. This idea went around a lot in my youth and I have found that it is an absolute.
Reading different authors' writing styles has shown me that the 'proper' way of writing taught in school is not always set in stone. Publishers and readers enjoy different writing styles and how authors convey information. This is proven by the sales of books and the popularity of authors.
Blogs, essays, and poems are the same. Each style is different, and sometimes an author's style of writing changes with each genre or subject.
Though, let's get back to this post's purpose.
I have decided that creating a review for books I come across, either for fun or for school, is important. I need to know why I didn't enjoy it but still recommend it to others as well as loving it so much to keep it.
I want to write my initial thoughts and feelings on the plot, characters, and many more. So, creating a section here for reviews is a way to put my ideas, experiences, and analysis in one place.
The purpose of this post is for others to comment on what books you recommend. Comment below the title, author, genre, series or stand-alone, and sub-genres, as well as a small plot analysis. Bonus points if you can write it as a way to convince someone (me) to go on a blind book date. I am mostly a fiction reader, but I'd enjoy some non-fiction as well. Poem books, novella collections, short story collections - all are welcome.
Now, how would I decide my next read?
That depends on a few things that include the following.
1. What I am reading/doing in school and freelance workload.
As an English major, I am bound to read a couple of things throughout the semester. For the spring of 2023, I am actually reading three books. I love to read, but I can't read more than one story at a time.
I have services for writing and editing. Like the above, I love helping those that need extra editing for their own stories. I also provide a beta-reading service; if they want a review, I write it.
2. Determining if it is a single story or a series.
As much as I love series when it comes to books, it would be too much for me to read and write about. This also ties into #1 a bit as I have to prepare for what I am reading during that time. Single stories will be selected first.
3. If I have the book in my TBR
I have about 100 stand-alone books in my TBR. I have an Excel sheet that I update when I buy new books. The way I have it set up is my 'read' library and my 'to read' library. My 'to read' library is then separated between series and singles.
and finally,
4. The number of requests, likes, and comments on the first comment of the recommendation.
After every book I finish my reviews on, I will go through the comments again and find the most popular book.
Please do not be discouraged if my reviews are not your recommendation or the most popular. Whatever is in my TBR will be first outside of school and my work. I love new suggestions, which is why comments will always be open.
So, what do you suggest?
