Behavioral Issues in Horses by Nicole Brickner

Once upon a time, I was a young girl with a beautiful black horse. After he came back from training as well as a bad riding accident/experience, he had problems; problems I did not know how to help nor did I have the time for him as a twelve-year-old girl. I wish I had this book and a better understanding of his thought process before I sold him. I miss him every day.

The Book

Nicole does a wonderful job really diving into different, common problems among horses and why they do what they do. Her solutions to a few problems were very knowledgeable, reassuring, and pain-stabbing for me.

I loved my young horse with all my heart and knowing I couldn't help him as well as the frustration of why he was doing certain things made me so upset, I decided to sell him. To this day, it was the worst decision of my life. I often wonder where he is - he would be about twelve years old this year as well.

The quotes and how to help are so obvious to me now, especially having grown more in an equestrian fashion. As a forever horse lover and once again, a horse owner, I'm more inclined to read all I can about behavioral issues and how to overcome them as well as everything else.

To my fellow equestrians, young and old, I do recommend this book as a starting point for behavioral issues as it suggests checking for health and equipment issues first (as you should). Then, it dives into the best actions for behavior such as kicking, biting, bucking, etc.

P.S.

As a shorter review, I want to thank Ms. Brickner for this book personally. Again, it has shown me what I should have done for my boy such a long time ago. You made me cry tears of pain as well as tears of understanding which turned into knowledge I now hold close for my horse and those I may and will own in the future. Thank you.
